Transformational selling tea at the railway station

Transformational leader:
Mr. Narendra Modi is current and 16th Prime Minister of India. He was born into a low-income family. In his formative years,he helped his father in selling tea at the railway station ; but despite all the odds and adverse conditions he prepared himself to become one of the most respected leaders not just in India, but in the world.

In my views, Modi is the living example of Transformational leadership. Below mentioned points explain why he is considered as a Transformational leader.
1) Emphasis on planning : From the beginning of his political career Modi has set goals that has helped manpower to complete individual tasks. He practically and personally supervises workers even at the very bottom of the pyramid.
Under his administration, the GDP of India has grown tremendously and ow India has become the world’s fastest-growing large economy. 1 He has got a vision of making India a global manufacturing hub by introducing the “Make in India” initiative .Make in India encourages foreign companies to manufacture products in the country.
Besides economic growth , it is also part of Modi Govt.’s plan to improve the overall public cleanliness in India. His office has launched the “Clean India” campaign that aims to put an end to open defecation within five years. Millions of toilets have been constructed in rural areas to encourage people to use them. The government has a plan to construct 60 million toilets by 2019.

Transactional Leader

Bill Gates is known to us as an investor, author, philanthropist, humanitarian and principal founder of Microsoft Corporation. Besides he is also known as a Visionary Leader.
In my opinion ,He possesses a combination of leadership styles, but his transactional leadership style has remained influent throughout his career. As a transactional leader he has visited new product groups and asked tough questions until he was convinced that the teams were on track and understood the output.
Some of the major traits of his leadership style are explained below:

1)Discipline at work:
Bill Gates has often being perceived as a commanding and strict leader by his competitors and subordinates as well. He has successfully transformed Microsoft into a solid and stable monopoly. He maintained company’s status, by focusing on creating obstacles to newcomers . Besides, he had to firmly control the organisation’s production process in order to accept the products by consumers.

2) Definitive thought process:
Bill Gates has exhibited the importance of definitive thought process and execution for nearly thirty years. He has been sharp , competitive and persistent in his career.

3)Aggressive administrator:
Being a no-nonsense person, he provided team strict and definitive guidelines that structured their initial meetings.
Microsoft was in a high-pressure environment because Bill made others as hard as he made himself. He was developing into the taskmaster who would keep eye on the parking lot on weekends to see who’d made it in.

4) Clear Structure and short-term goals:
Bill Gates modified existing products to fulfil market needs instead of focusing on new researches. Microsoft was not just the market leader, but also an ethical organisation who maintained its standard in the business. At the initial stages of Microsoft, focus was very much on attainment than comfort and well-being and continuity of the staff. Throughout his excelling career Microsoft, Bill’s command and control on transactional leadership style contributed towards astonishing growth of the organisation making it evident that there is a time and place for transactional leadership style to be successful.

Transactional Leadership works for developing the present conditions of the organisation. On the other hand, Transformational Leadership works for redirecting the present conditions of the organisation. For me ,understanding and acknowledging Transformational leadership of Narendra Modi was easy. He has got a great connect to masses. I have witnessed his work in India and I have no doubt that he would lead his party to victory in the upcoming elections in India.

Question 2 Part A
Best leader I have known:
Mr. John Martin had been my boss till last year and I believe he is the best leader I have had known so far. He was a true leader, who saw and nurtured my full potential. My boss was a GM at Offshore Logistics and well suited to his operations management position. He had a knack for remembering details of customers, contracts, and company property. He developed a passion in me for analyzing the problem, an aspect of a public-sector company that had never interested me before. He was an excellent problem solver and always had a redundant plan ready for the emergency situations. One of my boss’s key leadership traits was his ability to understand the company’s people. He would get acquainted with his direct employees well enough to learn their personal strengths and weaknesses. He had an excellent art of nurturing relationships in order to manage operations more efficiently. He understood different personalities and who could or could not handle a particular job.
He was very sensitive and concerned towards employees’ personal lives. He used humor to lighten the mood or improve morale to stimulate productivity. This was a skill that I had never before noticed in another leader. It was his leadership trait I admired most since my verbal delivery of humor was not nearly as quick as his.
As a leader, my boss was able to identify what needed to be done and had a good sense of strategy regarding efficient implementation. He had always been open to new ideas and ways of doing things and had provided opportunities for me to expand my value to the organisation.
He always had shown appreciation and interest in my success and for my life outside of work.

Question 2 Part B
I believe my boss possessed a transformational style of leadership. He was accountable for building a high performing, results driven team by holding my colleagues and me accountable. He always had been an impartial listener and got information without a pre-concluded answer in mind.
I had seen him work round the clock, his programs were so well planned and very hectic, he did not even eat in his offshore trip and slept only 2-3 hours a night. His dedication and determination towards work was phenomenal. He had the integrity and was aware of his strengths and limitations. He clearly had the capability to become a transformational leader and a charismatic boss in the organisation.
