The term motivation is derived from the Latin word movere meaning to “move”. The motivation theme and motivation theory have been widely studied and written about in a diverse collection of academic disciplines and is considered one of the most important areas of study in the field of organizational behavior.
The importance of the peoples’ motivation in the workplace has been analyzed by several authors and some motivation theories have emerged from the last century but no single theory is universally accepted.
However, there tends to be convergent points as to the definition of motivation where motivation is goal directed (Lawler,1994), motivation outlines the achievement and pursuit of goals (Denhardt et al., 2008) and motivation is environmentally dependent (Pettinger, 1996). Campbell and Pritchard (1976) define motivation as being the set of psychological processes that cause the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of behavior.
Nowadays hospitality managers and managers in general are asked to extract the maximum value from employees in order to generate profit. Therefore, employees’ management is an important aspect of every organization and this includes Maison Kayser.
Satisfaction of human resources is closely linked to highly motivated employees. Research has shown that motivated employees make a company more productive and competing in today’s global business world (Baker,2009). Indeed, motivated employees help to improve business revenue, reduce expenses such as labor costs (Swanberg et al., 2011), increase retention rates (Schaufeli and Salanova, 2008), enhance the work performance (Salanova, 2005) and consequently the overall job satisfaction.
