democracy bestows upon an elected leader the responsibility to
address the welfare of their local constituents, and at the same time
to moot, debate and pass laws that caters for the national interest
of the nation as a whole. There exists an imbalance on how the
elected leaders represent local and national interests. The dilemma
is precipitated at a time when an elected leader has to respond to an
issue that touches on both local and national affair but with
conflicting interests.

Assuming
my role as a senator, I would vote for the president’s proposed
military budget reform program. My motivation would be justified on
the basis that a positive project of national interest, should be
supported when its implementation would not have an adverse negative
impact on the local citizenry (Bardes, et al.). Through logrolling, I
will ensure presidential reform package entails a convincing strategy
that will cushion the constituents whose income will be affected as a
result of the implementation of the proposed plan. Failure to
harmonize the economic implications of such a plan is akin to
suppressing the minority for the benefit of the majority which is a
violation of the basic principles of democracy.

As
an elected leader, acting as a trustee rather than a delegate in this
emotive situation refers. Whereas acting as a delegate makes me
popular with my constituents since all I need to do is listen, record
and regurgitate their opinions and ideas, being a trustee will
present me with an opportunity to formulate a rather sober and
non-sentimental opinion that strikes a balance between the needs of
my constituents and the interest of the nation at large. My resolve

constituents who are more likely to be swayed by political or media

that my constituents will be swayed to believe their economic

leader who takes care of the interest of both the local constituents
and the whole nation’s citizenry becomes very critical.

The
support of critical motions should not be politicized at any cost.
Asan elected representative, I understand my obligation to be loyal
to my political party. My loyalty in the support of my party’s
agenda as a way of giving it a strategic opportunity to leverage on
its institutional advantages (Coleman, et al.). As a senator, I also
have a holistic responsibility to push for the legislative success of
the Senate in ensuring progressive motions are passed. My loyalty to
my party must not deter me from exploiting my legislative skills to
help solve possible instances of the legislative labyrinth. I will,
therefore, support the president based on the weight and ingenuity of
his project rather than their political party identification.

My
voting pattern will be greatly informed by my innate ability to
interrogate facts. I will make a decision after carrying out a
cost-benefit analysis of the project. That will guarantee a sober
judgment that is not influenced by age but reason. In such a case,
the constituents will naturally be inclined to posit that their need
for economic income is more important than the interest of national
security. In such an instance, they will want their leadership to
compel the federal government to institute an alternative source of
income for the period that the short-term economic losses are
anticipated. There is a possibility that the constituents will
threaten to instigate a civil resistance or collective action against
perceived injustice.

Constitutional
patriotism and the legislative success of a nation requires of
elected representatives to understand that neutrality in
decision-making and non-partisan formulation of opinions are key in
leadership. Both of these components are needed to balance the
interest of both their constituents and the nation’s citizenry as a
whole.
