Part II: Leadership Interview
For the purpose of this paper, I interviewed the nurse manager of my organization who is responsible for the management of the healthcare organization. The interview involved a meeting with the manager where I conducted a face-to-face interview while taking notes of the responses given. The interview involved questions concerning the leadership skills and stewardship of the organization from his position as the manager of the healthcare facility.
What Is Your Role As A Healthcare Team Member?
My role as a nurse manager involves managing the nursing workforce in this organization to ensure that they carry out their responsibilities accordingly. These roles include ensuring that the nurses have the necessary resources and a suitable environment to carry out their roles and responsibilities in the healthcare facility. Besides their roles of ensuring that patients are cared for, it is important to ensure that the nurses’ needs are also catered for. This also involves ensuring that the healthcare facility has the right number of nurses based on the demand for healthcare services. This is important as it ensures employee satisfaction, which in result translates into improved performance.
How Do You Define Professionalism And How Does Professional Responsibility Influence Your Work?
Professionalism is important in all organizations as this is directly related to the purpose and objectives of the organization. Professionalism involves conducting of oneself according to their profession by following certain guidelines and rules, which are important in the administration of duties and responsibilities. Due to the influence that nurse managers have in an organization, it is important to conduct myself with the utmost professionalism as other staff members are looking up to me as their role model. This will involve professional behaviors, which positively impact professional nursing behaviors. Professionalism also involves being able to provide care for the nursing staff as well as patients who require extensive healthcare services. Professionalism can be practiced by adhering to the code of conduct and by being accountable to other top leaders in the power hierarchy.
Do You Yourself as a Steward Of Health Care? Why or Why Not?
Yes, I do. Leaders are important as stewards of healthcare. An organization without good leadership is headed for failure. Leadership provides important aspects in the healthcare organization, which include good resource allocation and utilization. Leadership is also important in healthcare as the healthcare system is composed of different departments, which must have good leadership to enhance the collaboration of the departments. As a nurse manager, I am a steward of healthcare by participating in the decision-making process, which helps in better management of the organization, which leads to healthcare improvement.
Is It Important To You That Leaders Exercise Professional Advocacy And Authenticity As Well As Power And Influence When Working With Colleagues? Why or why Not?
Nurse leaders should exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence when working with colleagues as there must be a higher power in a team to bring order and direction of the team towards the organization’s goals and objectives. Nurse leaders have more responsibilities to undertake in an organization and this can be better performed when he/she exercises his/her powers accordingly. Nurse leaders are able to influence other staff members through their power exercise, as it is difficult to influence other individuals at the same level. Exercising professional advocacy will positively impact the organization in achieving its goals and objectives.
From the interview, there is clear evidence on the importance of nurse managers in ensuring that health care services are effectively delivered (Barr & Dowding, 2015). Due to the diversity of healthcare services, there must be responsibility of organizing, directing, and monitoring the implementation of policies and management of resources by the nursing managers (Barr & Dowding, 2015). The nurse managers also perform coordination services in ensuring that the healthcare objectives are achieved. This also gives them the opportunity to detect any challenges faced by the nursing workforce and report to the nursing administrator for determination of the next course of action (Barr & Dowding, 2015).
Professionalism in nurse managers is important as all healthcare practitioners must practice and adhere to professional ethics in the performance of their duties in the delivering of healthcare services (Makely, 2017). Nurse Managers represent the nursing staff and should act professionally as they have the power to influence their juniors who look up to them. The nurse manager is responsible for performing vital functions in the organization, which must be carried out in a clear and professional way. This includes doing things at the interest of the organization and not for selfish gains, which may negatively impact the organization (Makely, 2017).
Nurse Managers also perform leadership roles by motivating their staff members and participating in the management process of ensuring that operations are smooth and successful (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). Nurse Managers have been tasked with the role of providing leadership and guidance to the nursing staff. This role is achieved by addressing any issues that may be affecting the nursing staff and providing support to the nursing staff whenever it is required. As a leader, the nurse manager can ensure the provision of a safe environment to the nursing staff as well as the patients, which will enhance healthcare outcomes (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).
There are significant differences as well as similarities between a nurse manager and a registered nurse. Although both participate in the achievement of healthcare goals and objectives, each has different responsibilities to perform in the healthcare process (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). A nurse manager is concerned with the organization and allocation of the necessary resources required to ensure effective performance of duties and responsibilities by the nursing staff. The nursing staff members have a role of ensuring that the organization achieves the set healthcare goals by using the provided resources to perform their duties effectively (Barr & Dowding, 2015).
Some of the similarities include the role of leadership in their departments, which includes each of the members taking leadership roles in their respective departments to ensure that operations run smoothly and juniors are able to copy positive behaviors from them (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). Both the nurse manager and the nursing staff must practice professionalism in their duties as required by the law. Professionalism will ensure respect in the organization, trust, and cooperation, and will ensure that everyone is working towards the organization’s goals. Both are also stewards of healthcare as each has a role to play in ensuring the provision of healthcare services (Makely, 2017).
