Like many other health professions, dental hygienists plays and contributes important and valuable parts in the healthcare system and the public health. One of the most important role of dental hygienist is to help and teach individuals to obtain and maintain oral health. They educate and provide informations about oral health to others and performs various clinical procedures for the oral health. The main role and goal of dental hygienists can be divided into four different and detailed roles.
The four roles of dental hygienists in the public healthcare services are as a clinician, corporate, researcher, and educator. Moreover, all of this roles focus on improving the oral health of the public. In the clinician role, the dental hygienist will diagnose, plan, implement, evaluate and document treatment for prevention, intervention, and control of oral diseases, while practicing in collaboration with other health professionals. (1) In the corporate role, the dental hygienists will sale products and services from the companies that support oral health industry. In the research role, dental hygienists will run qualitative and quantitative researches that can be used for conducting surveys, analyzing the results, and testing new product or procedure. (1) In the educator role, dental hygienists are required to educate informations about oral professionals through educational theory and methodology in the the colleges and universities in the U.S. (1)
Many people assume that the dental hygienist’s only responsibilities is to clean teeth of individuals; dental hygienists also cover areas of patient care and after care treatment. The five main responsibilities of dental hygienist are patient screening, patient education, patient counseling, x rays and impressions, and treating patient. Patient screening means that the dental hygienists exams the patient’s teeth before the dentist. This exams will help the hygienist to identify signs of tooth decay and gum disease.(2) Then the dental hygienist will report this to the dentist. Patient education is where the dental hygienists teach the patient the proper ways for cleaning and flossing the tooth to prevent cavities, missing tooth, and gum disease.(2) Then it comes to patient counseling. It is the dental hygienist’s responsibility to make the patients feel comfortable and relax before and after their dentist appointment. They calm the patients down and provide patients with the instructions after the treatment. Another responsibility of the dental hygienists is x-rays and impressions. They take x-rays and impression of the patient’s teeth for making oral appliances.(2) And last, is treating the patients. It is the dental hygienists responsibility to perform regular cleaning of the mouth. They remove tartar, stains, and plaque from teeth and apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth. (2,3)
Dental hygienist play a major role in oral health prevention. The dentist’s role is to stop and cure the dental disease when the disease already taken place whereas is the dental hygienist’s responsibility for the prevention of oral disease and educate the patients about oral health.(4)
