Isaiah Thomas Isaiah Thomas was born on February 7th 1989. Isaiah’s father had made a bet with Detroit Pistons Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas that the Los Angeles Lakers would win the finals against the Detroit Pistons in the 1989 NBA playoffs. Isaiah’s father lost the bet, so he had to name his son after Isiah Thomas. Isaiah’s mother changed his name a bit so it would be a Isaiah Thomas is currently a 5’9″ Point Guard who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. He is an elite scorer and top class player. Isaiah lived a hard life. Ever since he was young he was shorter than the other kids. He had a strong passion for the sport of basketball, but his height was a massive factor concerning a basketball career. Doctor visits often ended in Isaiah crying because the doctor said he would not grow to six feet. Isaiah was desperate, he even used machines and hung from bars in an attempt to stretch out his body. Eventually, Isaiah realized that what he was doing wouldn’t help him. So he changed his game to adapt to his height. He knew that he had to play with the cards he was dealt with. After he understood what he had to do, he kept training to improve his strong points. There was a drastic increase in the quality of performance that Isaiah was producing. Isaiah spent 5 years in high school, he repeated the 11th grade due to academic deficiencies. Just when he was 15 years old, he was already friends with many NBA stars. He attended a summer league, full of pro players and college players, where he dominated. Still, many scouts doubted him due to his height. He was considered a measly 3 star recruit. People believed that he was too short to be of any use.Isaiah attended Washington University. During his first year, he quickly dispelled some thoughts about him being too short. Everyone heard about his inhumane work ethic and his desire to be the greatest. This desire was put into actions in this example. During the 2010-11 season, there was a fiercely competitive match. Late in the game, during a timeout, Isaiah really had to use the washroom, but fearful that he would lose valuable minutes, he requested towels that he shoved into his pants and urinated. Isaiah showed people that he would rather pee his pants instead of missing a second of game time. When he announced for the draft one year early, people were confused and thought he was crazy. He was selected last in the draft by the Sacramento Kings. He even beat out a lottery pick for the starting point guard position. 3 seasons later, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns. He wanted to be a starting point guard but they didn’t believe he was good enough. Finally, he got traded to the Boston Celtics. He achieved the role that he wanted. Isaiah Thomas’s story shows that if you try hard enough and you dedicate your being to accomplish your goals, you will achieve them. Isaiah could never choose his height but he could choose his destiny. And his destiny was to be an NBA All-star.On April 15, 2017, Isaiah’s sister died in a single-car accident. The playoffs had started the next day. Isaiah was heartbroken when he heard the news about his sister’s passing. He was considering quitting the sport of basketball. He said, “When I found out the news, I wanted to give up and quit. Never in my life have I thought about quitting. I realized quitting isn’t an option. That’s the easy way out. I will keep going for my sister because I know she wouldn’t want me to stop. I love you, Chyna, and I miss you so much, and everything I do for the rest of my life will be for you.”As he quoted, he knew that he couldn’t quit, not for his sister, himself, or the entire city of Boston. So Isaiah came to play the next day, which was also his sister’s birthday. During the pre-game shootaround, he was overcome with emotion, he started crying. He had the support of the crowd, his team, and the entire NBA. Isaiah played through his tears, and managed to score 53 points on his late sister’s birthday, leading the Boston Celtics to victory that game, and eventually the entire series. After the game Isaiah said this, “Today is my sister’s birthday, She would have been 23 today. The least I can do is play for her.”Isaiah’s entire life is an underdog story. All the odds were against him, but with hard work and dedication, he achieved his goals. He is still young and most likely has many more years in the NBA, and it will be a pleasure to watch the amazing things he does in the rest of his career to add to his amazing story.
