Culture, past experiences ad beliefs are all factors which form personal beliefs and values. Residential care can support these by training staff to listen and be responsive to the resident they care for, staff must be compassionate and empathetic to support the individual’s needs and beliefs. The individuals using the service rely on the staff to fulfill their needs whilst also respecting their beliefs and values; not paying attention, patronizing them and not showing compassion is being insensitive to the individual.
A potential challenge whilst supporting the beliefs and values of the individuals would be the care worker’s own contrasting values and beliefs which doesn’t align with the values required to care for older individuals. Societal and generational influences can affect the way the care worker handles and supports the old individual’s values and beliefs. A judge mental, impersonalized care can be the consequence of this.
This challenge can be overcome by having recruitment processes which closely evaluate whether the individual has the correct organizational values and motivations for working with older people in the residential care. It may be the case that the individual has applied for the job without any compassion or desire to help the older people in the residential care; this can lead to lack of quality and discriminative attitude to the older people they’re caring for.
